Stax Records was a record label from Memphis, Tennessee. Along with Sun and Motown, it has become one of the great cult labels to record collectors worldwide. The Stax label was originally founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, but was changed to Stax Records in 1961.
The label's first major hit was Last Night by the Mar-Keys, and that group's name was perhaps a play on the spelling of Marquis.
The Canadian versions of the Stax label releases are quite rare, and they are unique because of their special label designs created and used only for the Canadian market.
London Records Of Canada pressed and distributed Stax records in Canada from the outset in July 1961 through to the beginning of 1967 when Quality Records of Canada took over the distribution of both Stax and Volt.
