The Harvest label was introduced in Canada by Capitol Records (Canada) Ltd. in the summer of 1969. EMI had decided to launch a "progressive" or "underground" label in England to compete with Decca's DERAM label and Philip's VERTIGO label. Some of the initial Harvest LPs were released in North America by Capitol using the Harvest logo but in the USA and Canada, Capitol slotted the Harvest LP releases in with its regular Capitol numbering of releases and did not create separate catalogue numbers for them.
In Canada, the original Harvest releases were not advertised and were virtually unknown by the record buying public. The initial LPs were produced in lavish packaging but in small quantities. Very few of the LPs were reviewed in RPM Music Weekly and more importantly no 45 RPM singles were produced to promote these LPs (in the early 70s). Consequently they were deleted from the Capitol of Canada catalogue very quickly.
I remember seeing copies of The Battered Ornaments LP in the "bargain bins" of the Ottawa record shops for less than a dollar and sometimes as low as 49 cents ! But nowadays these LPs are viewed as being virtual works of art in their packaging, perhaps reflecting the hippy era from England in a very unique way .
It took the Pink Floyd to establish the Harvest label in Canada after 1970. Nowadays the non Pink Floyd Harvest LP Canadian releases from 1969 and 1970 are extremely hard to find in any condition. The Canadian and USA Harvest releases in 1969 and 1970 did not exactly follow the release schedule of the corresponding LP releases in England. For example, "Wasa Wasa" by Edgar Broughton was the first LP released on the Harvest label in England but it was the third LP to be released here in Canada.
Any further updates or information would be appreciated. Some Harvest LPs would later appear on the Capitol 6000 series (see separate discography on this web site).
