The Immediate label was the brainchild of Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham and was set up as a new and independent label in England in 1965.
Immediate 45s and LPs were manufactured and distributed in Canada between 1967 and 1969 by Columbia Records Canada Limited using metal parts sent from Columbia USA. Capitol Records Of Canada issued a couple of Immediate discs starting in 1969 but the Immediate label ran into financial problems in 1970 and there were no further releases.
But prior to the Columbia pressing and distribution deal within Canada, there were a couple of releases of Immediate UK discs in 1966 on Canadian Quality labels by way of agreements with US MGM. These were both covers of Jagger / Richard tunes and this explains perhaps why they were issued as the Rolling Stones were chart toppers in 1966 in Canada.
There were 2 Immediate UK 3 singles issued in Canada and both of these were manufactured and distributed by Quality Records Limited of Toronto.
• Quality 1826X (US MGM K-13530) Twice as Much: Sittin' on a Fence/Baby, I Want You (issued with rare picture sleeve in the USA but no picture sleeve was issued in Canada)
• MGM 13567X Chris Farlowe: Out of Time/Baby, Make It Soon
• MGM 13600X Twice as Much: Step Out of Line/Simplified (Canada release not yet confirmed)
Two more subsequent Immediate releases were distributed in the USA by United Artists but these do not appear to have been issued in Canada:
Immediate E-1901 - P.P. Arnold - The First Cut Is The Deepest / Speak To Me
Immediate E-1902 - Small Faces - Here Comes The Nice / Talk To You
Starting from August 1967, the Immediate 45s were pressed in Canada by Columbia Records of Canada and were usually shipped in the stock orange Columbia sleeves of the time as seen above. The most popular 45 issued was the 1967 psychedelic hit Itchycoo Park and copies of this title are the easiest to find. I have yet to come across the John Mayall 45 "Witchdoctor" although I am pretty sure I did see it many years ago.
