The 6000 Series Of 33 1/3 RPM (LP) Vinyl Discs (1960 through 1987)
(** compiled by Piers A. Hemmingsen, ast updated on Thursday, June 20, 2002 **)
Between 1960 and 1987, Capitol Records Of Canada issued the unique "6000" series of LP records for the Canadian market. The series encompasses the very best of Canadian popular music of the era, as well as an incredibly broad range of the very best European and American EMI artists tailored for the unique tastes of the Canadian record buying public, including The Beatles early and later Canadian-only releases. The 6000 series was boosted initially by Paul White and the decline of the 6000 series in the 1980s coincided with the arrival of the "global format" compact disc. The 6000 series has become famous among music collectors worldwide.
NOTE 1 - The month and year appearing immediately after the catalogue number are given where they appear on the rear sleeve; this date information was not always printed on the sleeve.
NOTE 2 - The dates in brackets are the EMI release dates from their "Vault Records" as provided to EMI Canada by Paul White. EMI stopped maintaining accurate records of release dates from the mid 1970s onwards.

(stereo copies came with the green inner sleeve, packed in loose plastic wrap with a red and white "stereo" sticker attached to the plastic)

The Canadian Capitol "Summer Holiday" LP was a huge seller in Canada in front of Beatlemania which was to arrive just a few short months later. The LP was number one on the CHUM LP chart for the week of June 3, 1963. The single "Summer Holiday" was at the top of the CHUM chart at the end of May 1963.

(Capitol's vault records indicate this was a mono-only release)
(S)T-6041 Sep 63 Vera Lynn /w Tony Osborne "Sings The Hits Of The Blitz" (September 3, 1963)
This was a huge seller in Canada in both mono and stereo formats and the LP was kept on catalogue through the 1970s and possibly the 1980s as the LP was re-issued on the orange and purple labels. More interestingly, Capitol Canada issued a follow-up LP entitled "More Hits Of The Blitz" on the Studio Two label in May 1967 (STAW-15027) and the back of this LP has been modified from its UK format to include a picture and track listing for the 6041 Canadian release which perhaps was an indication that by 1967 EMI in the UK was attempting to opt for worldwide consistency.
(S)T-6042 Sep 63 Victor Silvester "Victor Silvester In France" (September 3, 1963)
T-6043 Sep 63 Cliff Richard & The Shadows "Living Doll" (September 3, 1963)

(S)T-6048 Dr. William McCauley "Show Stoppers From O'Keefe Centre"
(October 15, 1963)
I have come across copies mono and stereo formats of this LP in the loose plastic bag wrap which is consistent with the outer LP wrapping being used through to the summer of 1964 ( eg rather than shrink-wrapped with cellophane).
T-6049 Nov.63 Rich Little "Scrooge And The Stars" (November 25, 1963)
T-6050 Harry Douglas & The Deep River Boys "Presenting" (December 30, 1963)
T-6051 Nov 63 The Beatles "Beatlemania !" (December 2, 1963)
According to Barry Norris, Toronto:
After listening to Tom Charrington play "Roll Over Beethoven" from the "new" Beatles LP on his CKGM 980 radio show on a Friday evening, Barry Norris went down the next day (eg Saturday morning) to the Woolworths store on Queen Mary Road in Montreal where he claims he saw the Beatlemania Capitol 6000 Lp and inspected it to see what the fuss was all about. Incredibly, this was the Saturday BEFORE President John F. Kennedy was assassinated (November 22/23, 1963), meaning that this Lp had been released in Montreal before the December 2, 1963 "official vault record" release date. Barry would bet a "million dollars" on this date if he had the million available !
Bruce Spizer, the Beatles researcher from New Orleans, calls this the "time compression" factor.
The first three Beatles LPs issued by Canadian Capitol (6051, 6054, and 6063) were re-issued at least 6 times between the early 1960s and the mid-1980s using the black/rainbow, black/rainbow with brackets around the word Canada on the label perimeter print, red target (early 1970s), orange (mid-1970s), purple (late 1970s), and finally a "retro" black/rainbow label (early 1980s). Later re-issues post the mid-1970s used an "ST" prefix to denote "stereo".
T-6052 Feb 64 The Shadows "Dance On With The Shadows" (February 3, 1964)
T-6053 Feb 64 Helen Shapiro "Helen Shapiro In Nashville" (February 3, 1964)
T-6054 Feb 64 The Beatles "Twist And Shout" (February 3, 1964)
Also, pictures and track listings of the Capitol Of Canada Beatles LPs "Twist And Shout" and "Long Tall Sally" were advertised on the rear sleeves of two Capitol USA compilation LPs that were given a release in Canada during 1964 (no stereo copies are known) which make these two LPs unique to Canada:
Capitol T-2094 Mono Various Artists "Chart Busters Volume Four" (2 Beatles songs)Capitol T-2125 Mono Various Artists "The Big Hits From England And The USA" (2 Beatles songs)
(S)T-6055 Feb 64 Mrs. Mills w/ Geoff Love "Everybody's Welcome At Mrs. Mills Party"

T-6062 The Dave Clark Five "Session With The Dave Clark Five" (April 13, 1964)
T-6063 May 64 The Beatles "Long Tall Sally" (April 27, 1964)
"Long Tall Sally Capitol T-6063 (mono) Released: May 11, 1964 This was the last unique Canadian Beatles LP...and unique it was. The packaging and track selection would indicate to me at least, that these were hectic times at Capitol Records of Canada. After having issued a repackaged UK album (Beatlemania! With the Beatles) and an entirely new one (Twist and Shout) made from other UK releases, Capitol was now seeing activity from it's cousin to the south. Capitol Records in the U.S. released Meet the Beatles in January and the Beatles Second Album on April 10. The Long Tall Sally album is a snapshot of this transformation from UK to US formats. Capitol of Canada must of been short on time when it came to designing a cover since they went ahead with a modified version of the US Second Album artwork. The Long Tall Sally title and selected song list neatly replaced it's US counterpart. Since this album didn't include She Loves You, this area of the cover was replaced with the Capitol 6000 series logo. The back cover features the same US artwork but includes numerous Canadian markings and photos of both previous Canadian LP's. Across the top of the back cover it reads "The Beatles with a new recording of 'Roll Over Beethoven' - and a programme of your favourites and their favourites". This must have been confusing for owners of Beatlemania! With the Beatles as they already owned Roll Over Beethoven and three other tracks on this album. This "new recording" was more than likely the US "Duophonic" version. In addition to the four duplicate tracks, Capitol of Canada included another eight, one
more than the 11 found on the Second Album. Both LP's included a couple of B-sides and two new tracks (Long Tall Sally and I Call Your Name) which wouldn't be issued in the UK until June 19. To round out Long Tall Sally Capitol of Canada added I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy (from the UK single and US Meet the Beatles) and the two leftover tracks from Please Please Me LP: I Saw Her Standing There (US Meet the Beatles) and Misery. The latter track was not to appear on an album in the US until Rarities was released in 1980. In the US the Second Album contained three tracks not found on Long Tall Sally: Money (Beatlemania! With the Beatles), She Loves You (Twist and Shout LP) and Thank You Girl. This last track didn't appear on any of the three unique Canadian LP's but was issued as B-side twice! In 1963 with From Me to You and on Do You Want to Know a Secret in 1964. Track Listing Side 1:I Want to Hold Your Hand; I Saw Her Standing There; You Really Got a Hold On Me; Devil in her Heart; Roll Over Beethoven; Misery. Side 2: Long Tall Sally; I Call Your Name; Please Mister Postman; This Boy; I'll Get You;
You Can't Do That." (Source - Ebay 5 September 2001 - seller Id is oblaelliott, , Tyne & Wear, Newcastle, United Kingdom)
(S)T-6064 Apr 64 Ron Goodwin "Elizabethan Serenade" (April 13, 1964)
(re-issued in the 1970s on olive green and orange labels, then as SM-6064 Stereo, on the yellow Capitol "budget" label)
The last 2 songs on side 2 of the Ron Goodwin LP are both written by George Martin and are credited to "EMI recording manager George Martin"; "Elizabeth And Essex Love Theme"(2:32) and "Serenade To Double Scotch" (2:43). Both of these instrumentals carry that unique backing sound that was lent to so many classic Beatles songs.

In spite of the cover photos and titling which make this look like an official Beatles release, this is not The Beatles at all; the LP was made by a group of Tower (US Capitol subsidiary) studio musicians conducted by Jimmie Haskell; the music was also transcribed by Jimmie Haskell. The listener is asked to sing along to the instrumental backing and the lead vocal part is handled by an organ ( perhaps EARLY KARAOKE !). This was the first LP release on Tower in the US. In Canada, the LP was issued with a loose plastic wrap around a special fold-open cover. The mono issue came with no paper inner sleeve

"Gerry Miskolczi discussed the rarity of this LP with producer Paul White. Paul told him that by the time that Capitol had issued this LP in the summer of 1966, the whole British Invasion had been supplanted by the good vibration sounds of The Beach Boys as well as the new sounds of Dylan, The Byrds, The Lovin Spoonful, and The Mamas And The Papas. The Swinging Blue Jeans looked very dated. This second album by the Swinging Blue Jeans "bombed" upon release and most copies were returned directly to Capitol where they were destroyed. This album, therefore, is particularly rare."

"I recall going to see the weird and awkward double-bill of "On Her Majesties Secret Service (James Bond)" and "Let It Be" at the Mayfair Theatre near the Lansdowne Bridge on Bank Street in Ottawa sometime in 1970, possibly winter. After years of up-beat Beatles films such as A Hard Day's Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine, watching this new Beatles movie was a painful experience and the event was very much the "visual funeral" of the Fab Four. I watched all of OHMSS but left the "Let It Be" film (an apt title) before it ended ! I didn't rush out to buy the SOAL-6351 soundtrack, even with the unique box-set packaging ..."
